CHEER is in Your Neighborhood

 

After the loss of his wife, Harry was left alone in his home with limited social support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Harry heard about the CHEER program delivered through Bergen Volunteers and decided to reach out to learn more. When Harry connected with CHEER, he expressed a need for grocery shopping.

Though spry for his age of 99, Harry’s Fort Lee home has a lot of steps that makes bringing groceries inside increasingly difficult. We assured him that we would find him a volunteer that would provide him the support he sought while allowing him to keep as much independence as possible. Within two short weeks we matched Harry with his CHEER volunteer, Robert. Robert visits Harry each week, picking up his groceries and prescriptions. He offers Harry a smiling face (through his mask) and brings groceries up his stairs safely into Harry’s kitchen.

Although Harry no longer has his wife by his side, he is happy to have the support from Robert. Harry lovingly shared, "I feel so blessed to have this program. Robert is a tremendous help and we get along great. Thank you for this wonderful service."
