Volunteers Needed for Food Drive Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 17 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday, when hundreds of thousands of Americans will honor the memory of Dr. King by volunteering in their communities.

To kick off the 2011 MLK holiday and to set the pace for volunteering throughout the year, the Volunteer Center will host a Food Drive on Thursday, January 13th from 2:00-7:00 pm and Friday, January 14th from 7:00 am-12:00 noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 64 Passaic Street in Hackensack, where its offices are located.

Volunteers are needed to accept, sort and pack the donations of canned and packaged food that will be collected. Food will be given to the Center for Food Action sites in Bergen County.

According to Thelma Fedele, at the Center for Food Action, “We’ve seen a staggering increase in the number of people who need help to put food on their tables. Holiday food drives are wonderful, but people need food 365 days a year.”

To register to be a volunteer, or for more information about this event, call (201) 489-9454 Ext. 116 or email info@bergenvolunteers.org.
