Both of Gladys’s hips and knees were damaged due to arthritis. She had four unsuccessful surgeries leaving her with limited mobility. During this time, she cared for her husband while he battled, and ultimately succumbed, to cancer. The loss of her husband and inability to walk left her devastated and lost. Gladys felt hopeless and had a hard time imagining the future.
Gladys had taken care of so many others but was unfamiliar with the idea of someone taking care of her.
When Gladys connected to the Bergen Volunteers CHEER program, she felt whole again.
Now Gladys receives invaluable support from CHEER volunteer, Greg. Over the past ten years, they have formed a deep friendship. CHEER has helped her regain independence and smile.
Gladys knows that through CHEER she will always have a helping hand.
Thanks to donors like you, Bergen Volunteerscan continue to support individuals like Gladys, making sure they are safe in their homes with groceries, medication, and a caring volunteer to check in.
