Martin Luther King Day of Service

“Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve”
-
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King

This January hundreds of thousands of Americans will honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by participating in community service projects on the days surrounding the celebration of his birthday on January 17. As the saying goes, “make it a day ‘on’ not a day ‘off’.”

Individuals, municipalities, schools, community and faith-based organizations are encouraged to develop projects that engage people in service as a tribute to Dr. King. Paint a room in an educational or public space, organize closets or pantries, clean up a park, organize a social event for seniors in a nursing home or serve meals to homeless people, or dream up a new and useful project in your community.

Go to the Volunteer Center’s website at www.bergenvolunteers.org for a list of other Martin Luther King Day of Service activities in the area. For more ideas, visit websites such as www.mlkday.gov, www.handsonnetwork.org or www.jerseycares.org.
